These are the things I drew for our first assignment. The first drawing we were told to draw a shoe with laces. I decided to draw my Doc Martin boots from the side. I'm most proud of this drawing compared to the others. Next, I drew a portrait. I didn't use any reference so I drew a random person and did my best to place the facial features in the correct places. After, I drew a city from a 2 pt perspective and did a corner of a street. I feel that I could definitely improve on this and pay more attention to detail and the placement of the buildings. Lastly, I drew my hand. I wanted to do it from an angle that wasn't just facing flat, so I bent my fingers and drew what I saw.
Value
This was the object that I was to draw for the final value project. There was a pinwheel inside a glass jar with scissors placed in front of it. I actually found it quite difficult to draw this especially with the pinwheel and it's angle.
Perspective
In class Ms. Rossi showed us how to create 3D objects from different perspectives using a vanishing point. We practiced using one, two and three vanishing points. We started off by drawing simple boxes to get the hang of where to place your lines. I feel like now that I know that when creating perspective art, I can use the tools we practiced to incorporate in my art.
For our final perspectives project we had to build a structure with legos and take a picture of it at different angles. I chose the position that is pictured on the left. Our structure was positioned at an angle where we only needed one vanishing point. My final drawing is on the right. I really wanted to focus on the position of the blocks and what it looked like in the picture instead of the tiny details. I feel if I had more time to work on this I could really add details and fix some of the sizing. Overall I feel I have definitely improved and learned a lot about perspective in art.
Pen and Ink
For this unit we began by making value charts using different textures. We used sharpie pens. When using these types of pens you have to be careful because you can't make any mistakes.
|
Next we had to watch a few Youtube videos on how to shade different shapes using pen and ink. Here I got to play with different textures and techniques that the video showed.
|
For my pen and ink project I chose to do the fairy tale and fable option. My last two options were to create a art piece from Snow White and Alice in Wonderland. For Snow White I wanted to make something using the apple dripping with poison. I decided I would use a cauldron in the picture too. For Alice in Wonderland I wanted to do something for when they would paint the Queen of Heart's roses red. Those are the reference photos I chose.
I drew the different sketches for each fairy tale (sorry that there is ink bleeding so it's hard to see). In the end I decided I was going to chose the sketch where the apple was over the cauldron. I also chose to add a shelf and a door opening in the background.
Here is my final outcome using the pen. I really liked how this turned out. I like how I used bold lines to show the contrast. I also liked how my shelves and cauldron turned out too. I wish that my door was more detailed and the apple was maybe a little bigger or stood out more. I also feel that the wood panelling in the back could've been lighter and I think I got a little carried away. I thought this was really fun to make and I think working with pen was really simple.
Self Evaluation
Discuss your decision on pen and ink techniques. Why you chose to use one or more. (If you used stippling in certain areas explain why you chose this technique. Explain for all other techniques used).
For most of my technique, I used cross-hatching. I felt that you could show different textures with using one technique and that is why I liked cross-hatching. I used stippling on the bubbles because I just felt it looked best for showing its a liquid.
How did you use perspective? Why is perspective important?
I tried to show that the cauldron and apple were in front of the shelves. I also tried to show that the door was opening in the back. Perspective is important to show the different sizes of objects and the angle of that object. It also makes the picture look more realistic.
How is texture important in your composition?
Texture is important because it makes the picture look more real and it adds detail to the objects.
Why is value so important in this project?
Value is important in this project because when using pen, its a great tool to show where the light is coming from and how it hits the objects.
Describe your craftsmanship (How well the project is crafted technically)
I used a lot of cross-hatching for most of my technique. I also made most of my lines very bold and dark. I think I used most of the technique correctly.
If you could recreate your piece what would you do differently to enhance your final outcome?
I feel that I could've made things less bold and I wish I paid more attention to detail. I feel that it doesn't look as realistic as I wanted it to.
(Only answer if you did fairytale) Which Fairytale or Fable did you create? How did you represent the story in your own way?
I chose Snow White. I showed a different perspective of the apple being pulled from the cauldron than it does in the movie.
When applying the pen and ink techniques why and how is it important to make sure you understand the concepts taught in class?
Because these techniques can not only be used with pen, but with many other art materials as well.
As a growing artist how do you think what you have learned will guide and better your future projects.
In future art pieces I will remember the technique we learned to create more realistic and detailed pieces.

Colored Pencils
For this project we were required to recreate a famous painting in history with objects we found at home. I decided to do this painting called "The Son of Man" by René Magritte. It was painted in 1964. I liked this painting because it was really simple and it's interesting to look at. You can tell it has deeper meaning. Instead of using an actual person to do this I just used one of my stuffed bears and found a black jacket to put on it. I also found the only hat I owned to but on it's head. The ribbon was already around the bears neck. I also used an apple and tried my best to cover it's face. I photo shopped clouds in the background. I thought this project was going to be harder but I actually liked how quick it took. If only I could take out my hand in the picture, otherwise I think this is pretty accurate!
